Corey Johnson

I was born in God’s Country, Watertown, SD in January 1974. New Year’s Baby at that time. Grew up in Sioux Falls since the age of 2. attending our local schools. Oscar Howe Elementary, Edison Junior High, and O’Gorman High School, and in 1998 graduation college from SDSU in Construction Management. I have had the opportunity of working with my family my whole life growing up with a shovel in one hand and a hammer in the other. Now I currently have taken the role of President of G.A. Johnson Construction building Commercial, Industrial, and Residential Projects. Our company is one of the leading builders in our area.

Lets get to the fun stuff. I was handed down a passion for hunting and fishing. I have had the opportunity to learn these both and experience the ”Family” passion, truly from my father Jerry, my older brother Mike and both my Grandpa’s (“Shorty” Lamont and the late Alvin Johnson). I have a list of people who also gave me the “fever” to name a few: Uncle Terry, My Cousin’s You know who you are!, Charlie Bledsoe, Fred Bear, Jim Shockey, Tred Barta, Jeff Boer… OK I am getting carried away.

All of my first memories revolve around fishing and hunting. Ask Grandpa Lamont about my first fishing trip “Gophers”. Five gallon bucket, have to do the deed… You get the point. From BB guns to my first 12gauge BPS (which I still prefer today) I have hunted black birds, pigeons, doves, ducks, geese, pheasants, grouse. It fly’s I have probably either shot it or took its picture. Thanks, again Dad for giving me the opportunities! (Ohh… don’t forget Mom she let us go!) I have enjoyed self training my yellow lab “Cash” from start and am proud of my accomplishments. She is a ball to hunt behind. Big game that has fallen from my “sticks and/or stones”; turkey, whitetail, mule deer, and soon to be elk. Archery hunting is by far my favorite, but I also enjoy rifle and muzzleloader season. I am a Ranger fan. Not the team, not the truck, I am talking real boats. By far the best to fish out of, ask my wife. I enjoy being on the water fishing for walleyes, bass, crappies, northerns, musky, and yes jumbo perch. By the way she has the largest stuffed walleye on our wall. I will and am determined to have a larger one hanging over hers.

Since I am onto my wife, let’s get to that. Every hunter has to have a good wife. Well, boy did I luck out. She actually lets me go!  Rebecca and I were married sometime in 2003, I think… hehe. She is my right hand, soul mate as you call it. I knew we were destined to be together, when on our first date to her house she had a 357cal Smith & Wesson Seven shot sitting on the table. The exact pistol I had in my truck. Yes I was scared, but something said hold on to this one. Luckily her gun is the same size as mine, (even fight I think I can out shoot her… maybe). Do I need to say anymore… Luv yah hun.

In 2004, my pride and joy was born, Jake, this kid now 4, is destined to become the next Fred Bear, or ME. At age three he started shooting his bow, hanging tree stands with dad, fishing walleyes, and recently became a ditch pigger for snow carp. Jake has more patients than his dad ever had. Shot his first duck with his bow.(plunger arrows. duck was not harmed) I have a new hunting buddy. What a feeling, now I know why my dad also had me following his foot steps across the deep snow banks chasing that dream critter.

Well again, 2007 my little angel was born. Yes, Moms got her in camo. Hopefully she is a little more laid back than Mom. Bella has been a pure delight, she likes watching outdoor shows too. I am looking forward to her catching her first fish; hopefully it’s bigger than Mom’s. If she is anything like her mother she will be competing with Jake soon as she can walk.
To sum up my bio, every hunt or catch that I have I savor. Every moment I spend with my family I cherish. Every friend I meet or family member we add, I value. I thank God for giving me the opportunities I have received and experiences I will partake.

It’s been a pleasure being a part of the Wild Dakota Team. It’s a wonderful experience to share that family orientated hunting and fishing experience with such good folks as Jeff Boer, Vern Boer, and the entire Wild Dakota Pro-staff.

Boy’s, where we heading next?
